But over the centuries, not only humanity has evolved, but also the way we trade. Today, it’s hard to imagine that spices were paid for in textiles, and textiles in fruits and vegetables. Instead, almost every country has its own currency or, as in much of Europe, a common currency. The euro has been able to establish itself around the world since its introduction, but now we’re going to talk about another currency that has been around much longer than the euro or the hryvnia. Want to know what the US dollar is?

Background and history of the emergence of the US dollar

The United States dollar (USD) is the official currency of the United States of America, and is also one of the most influential and widely used currencies in the world. It is probably the most widely used not only in the United States, but also in many other countries as a reserve currency and the main means of international payments.

The history of the US dollar is still quite “green”, like itself. Moreover, it already existed before the United States. The dollar originated not in the USA, as many believe, but in Spain. And this was at the beginning of the 16th century. Then there was a currency called “dollar”. From there, the currency got to the Netherlands and became a “thaler”. The name “thaler” itself came from Joachimsthal (a city in Bohemia, where Joachimsthaler silver coins were minted), and gradually this name became attached to large silver coins in Europe. So the roots of the dollar really go deeper than just the USA! Only later, due to pirate raids, the currency got across the ocean to the colonies of that time, and over time turned into a dollar.

During the American Revolutionary War, the colonists tried to create their own currency, but failed with the so-called “continental currency.” The call for a stronger financial system grew louder. “The United States is destined to become the most powerful industrial and commercial power in the world,” confidently declared the first US Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton. However, just a few years after declaring independence in 1776, the young nation was at economic rock bottom: without industry, without its own currency, but with a pile of debts to Europe, from which it, in fact, wanted to renounce.

To get out of this predicament, an economic recovery was needed. In Hamilton's opinion, a single currency and, accordingly, a measurable success factor would be useful. Although the Spanish "dollars" widely used silver and gold, they had different precious metal contents in each federal state.

From an agricultural country to an industrial state

Members of Congress put an end to this coin confusion on July 6, 1785, and decreed: "The currency of the United States of America is one dollar. The silver content thereof is 375.64 grains. The decimal system of numerals shall be used. The smallest unit shall be half a cent." That's all, they said - how they cut it off! This date can be considered the day the dollar appeared.

Hamilton, therefore, still had the desired financial basis for the fantastic upsurge that was to come from the country's gigantic and historic transition from an agricultural to an industrial nation. The Secretary of the Treasury had sworn to the farmers to open up the opportunity for them to sell their goods to the hungry industrial workers living in the hungry, growing cities. Naturally, this gave hope that they would become the most stable buyers of milk, grain, and meat.

Hamilton made it clear to businessmen and workers that they would only prosper with modern factories. The idea caught on, and factories were built and exported all over the world.

What was missing was a central authority to coordinate monetary policy. In its absence, financial anarchy reigned, with numerous institutions continuing to print their own banknotes. Despite the Civil War of 1861, both sides needed huge amounts of money, and so they set up printing presses that churned out tons of new bills around the clock.

But while inflation was rampant in the South, President Abraham Lincoln managed to introduce his banknotes as the only valid means of payment in the midst of the war. The creation of the dollar was completed, and its obverse featured a portrait of the current Secretary of the Treasury, Salman Chase. But there was not enough imagination for the reverse, and therefore, deciding not to bother, they left it simply green, which is why it was quickly nicknamed the “greenback” by the people. But the symbolic essence was achieved: one nation — one banknote. Thus, all the others (approximately 7,000 different banknotes from hundreds of banks) “rested in peace” – were replaced.

Today, it is not only the main currency in the United States, many other countries have also recognized it as an official main means of payment or accept it as a foreign currency or second currency. Here are just a few of these countries:

El Salvador

Ecuador

Panama

Liberia

Maldives

Thus, it remains important today. However, it has also suffered a number of setbacks. Until recently, for example, it seemed increasingly to be losing its role as a reserve currency to the euro.

The US dollar index (compared to the euro, yen, pound sterling, Canadian dollar, Swedish krona and Swiss franc) also shows that the heyday is far behind. It reached its absolute peak in the mid-1980s, after which it continued to fall. What is happening now is a separate, sad conversation.

The US dollar has undergone a long transformation, from simple silver coins to modern polymer banknotes filled with security features and complex designs. Its appearance has changed under the influence of historical events, technological progress, and security needs.

The main stages of the evolution of the dollar

In 1792, after the passage of the Coinage Act, the first silver dollar coins were minted. They had a fairly simple design: on the obverse, an image of a woman, the personification of Liberty, and on the reverse, an eagle, symbolizing the power of the young nation. This design remained classic for many decades, changing only in detail.

The emergence of paper money

During the Civil War in 1861, the US government first issued paper banknotes – “greenbacks”. They had a greenish tint due to the use of a special dye, which made it difficult to counterfeit. The design of the banknotes at that time was quite simple – portraits of political figures, the denomination and minimal decoration.

First major update

At the beginning of the 20th century, the design of the dollar underwent major changes. In 1929, the standard sizes of banknotes were reduced, which made them easier to use and store. Portraits of prominent American leaders appeared on the front of the banknotes, and symbols of national pride appeared on the back. It was then that the classic look of banknotes appeared, which has survived to this day.

The Cold War and New Technologies

In the 1950s, the first security features appeared: special watermarks, thin metalized threads, unique serial numbers. This was a time when counterfeiters began to use new counterfeiting methods, so the US government was forced to adapt the design.

The 1996 Revolution

This year was a landmark for the dollar - a new design of banknotes appeared. For the first time in many decades, portraits were shifted to the left, and background images acquired a more complex texture. New color shades were introduced, which made banknotes even more recognizable and secure. This especially applied to the 100-dollar bill, which became one of the most secure in the world.

Modern dollar

In the 21st century, banknotes continue to improve. Today, the US dollar has a complex multi-layered security system: 3D holograms, changing colors, micro-fonts and even tactile elements for people with visual impairments. In 2013, an updated 100-dollar bill was introduced with an improved design that combines tradition and innovation.

Will the dollar change in the future? Probably. The US government is already considering the possibility of introducing a digital dollar, which could change the perception of currency in general. But regardless of what the money of the future looks like, its history remains a fascinating journey through the ages.

What is the US dollar made of?

Dollar banknotes are not printed on regular paper, but on a special material consisting of 75% cotton and 25% linen. This is why they feel noticeably different from paper sheets, have a characteristic texture, and can withstand significant physical stress:

To the touch, dollar bills are stronger than regular paper and can withstand about 4,000 bends (compared to regular paper, which tears much faster).

Banknotes do not contain wood, although they are sometimes mistakenly called "paper".

Banknotes are printed by the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing, which uses special methods to increase the security and durability of the banknotes.

And each banknote has microscopic red and blue fibers woven into the fabric, which helps make it harder to counterfeit.

Dollar today

As of February 4, 2025, the US dollar remains a key topic in economic discussions. Despite expectations of a possible weakening, the dollar continues to demonstrate resilience. In 2024, the US economy showed significant growth, supported by innovations in the field of artificial intelligence and a stable monetary policy of the Federal Reserve. These factors contributed to the strengthening of the dollar in the international arena:

The policies of the administration of President Donald Trump, in particular the imposition of additional tariffs on imports from China, have affected currency markets. As of early February 2025, the dollar remained stable after the imposition of 10% tariffs on Chinese goods. The euro fell 0.20% to 1.032$ as the market anticipated possible tariffs on the European Union, which could increase inflation in the United States and support high interest rates.

Experts have mixed opinions on the future of the dollar. Some analysts predict a possible weakening of the dollar in 2025 due to economic and political challenges, including the impact of new tariffs and their consequences for the US economy.

Interesting and historical facts about the dollar

1. Dollars with secret messages

If you look closely at the banknotes, you can find hidden symbols and marks that are added to protect against counterfeiting. For example, the $100 bill has a small owl in the ornament in the upper right corner.

2. Cost of producing banknotes

The issuance of one $1 bill costs about 5-6 cents, and the most expensive to produce are $50 and $100 bills due to complex security features.

3. The symbolism of the number 13

The back of the one-dollar bill features a 13-step pyramid, an eagle holding 13 arrows and 13 olive branches, and the coat of arms has 13 stars on top. This is a reference to the 13 original states that founded the United States.

4. Why is the dollar green?

Green ink began to be used to print bills in the 1860s because it was the most resistant to wear and fading. This is when the name "greenbacks" came into being - this is how these banknotes were called because of their color.

5. Banknotes withstand washing

Thanks to their cotton-linen composition, dollars can survive an accidental wash in a jeans pocket. They don't get soggy like regular paper.

6. There is a $100,000 bill.

Yes, but it was never in circulation among the general public. It was issued in 1934 only for settlements between Federal Reserve banks. It depicts President Woodrow Wilson.

7. Dollars can travel the world for decades

On average, a $1 bill lasts 5-6 years, while $100 bills can last for 15 years or more.

8. The dollar is the most counterfeited currency in the world

The 100-dollar bill is the most commonly counterfeited, especially outside the U.S. Therefore, their security is constantly being improved.

9. The first dollar was not paper.

The first dollars in the United States were coins, and only later did paper banknotes appear.

10. There were strange denominations

Previously, the United States printed banknotes in denominations of 500, 1,000, 5,000, and even 10,000 dollars! But they were removed from circulation in 1969.

Conclusion

Now you know how the dollar came to be in the United States. It continues to play a key role in the global economy. Its exchange rate remains the object of close attention of investors and analysts, as it is influenced by both domestic economic indicators and global political decisions.

It’s been a long time since business was conducted solely through the exchange of goods, and money was still completely unknown.
